guiding me home
in the darkest night
In the depths of my wandering soul
My heart calls upon Your glorious name
a familiar prayer I’ve known forever.
l breath in your grace
and It wraps around me like a warm summer breeze kissing my skin
like an ocean wave crashing all around me.
Your spirit surrounds me with comfort like calm waters in the midst if a raging storm.
You hold me and remind me that I’m never alone
Oh, Your beautiful light
it always carries me home
to the beauty of Your love
In the darkest night
In the depths of my wandering soul
I’ll never forget the promises You’ve made in the light
All I have to do is call Your great name
And Your beautiful light guides my way
No matter how dark the night
You always welcome me home.

When It Feels Like You Shine in the Dark Alone
By: Angela Thomas
About twenty minutes ago, my high school senior, Grayson, came bursting through the back door after school.
“Mom,” he hollered to me.
“I’m in here, honey,” I yelled back from my writing chair, “How was school?”
Around the corner he came and with no earthly idea what I’d been doing all day, and then, I am not kidding, he just said this to me, “Mom, school was okay, but mom, you gotta know it is so hard to be the light at that school. I mean it. Every single day, I am completely surrounded by darkness. There is no way I will ever be enough light.”
“Grayson, do you know what I’ve been sitting here doing?”
“I’ve been writing about our call to be God’s light in the darkness.”
Grayson went on to tell me that he’s not personally discouraged about being just one of a few Jesus lights at his school. His frustration is that no one seems to get it. The other students see his light. They respect his light. They have even given him two nicknames, Jesus and Sunshine (I told him I’d take either of those). But Grayson doesn’t see anything changing. He consistently shows up everyday bringing the light of Christ and the darkness never seems budge.
I hope what I said to my son this afternoon will encourage you too. I told him something like this:
“We are called to be obedient. We shine on assignment from God. Grayson, until graduation day, you have been divinely assigned to that school, those teachers and the thousands of students who go there. Your only responsibility is to reflect back to them what God has done for you. You do that with your voice. The words you choose. Your work effort. Your smile. Your servant’s heart. Your compassion and your grace. Baby, you just get yourself over there every morning and shine bright as the sun.
God has sent the Holy Spirit to take care of the change. You are planting seeds in the hearts of young men and women. You are radically and gently speaking the truths of Scripture, bold to say why you act the way you do and who is the Lord of your life. That is your assignment. The Holy Spirit will take care of the rest. You cannot put the whole school in a holy headlock until they cry, “Jesus!”
You may never know how many people will one day remember your light and the name, Jesus, and finally let the God of heaven set them free. But that’s not your assignment. You’re supposed to shine into their darkness. God loves them even more than you do and He will keep coming with His radiant light for all who have eyes to see.
Maybe your assignment is a lot like Grayson’s right now, surrounded by darkness with no change in sight. Can I give you some encouragement?
God works in the unseen.
Behind the scenes.
Deep in the hidden places of the heart.
If He has sent you and your light into darkness, then He is at work. Trust what you cannot see to the God who never misses a thing.
God is glorifying Himself. Let Him shine, baby. Let him shine.
